2022 Fall Share Week 3 - Snow!

Posted on November 14th, 2022 by Kim Barker
Ever since starting to farm, I have experienced the same kind of joy about the first snow that I did as a child. Even though we have 4 weeks left of veggie shares, the snow signifies the end of the season and the beginning of a season of rest. Days that don't begin at dawn and end long after dusk. Where the to-do list shortens and leaves room for projects we've been meaning to get to for a long time. In our case this year, that's building a toolshed and fixing up our golf cart for more efficient harvests. The arrival of snow makes slow down unarguable - one simply can't grow things outside when it's snowing.

We are still busy bees at the moment though.

The snow isn't too much of a problem for our veggies. We are still harvesting leeks, beets, broccoli sprouts, and carrots from outside. In the cold room (which actually acts as a 'warm' room when it's below freezing outside) is safely storing all our turnip, cabbage, onions, squash, winter radish, hakurei, and kohlrabi. Our greenhouses are thriving with bok choy, kale, chard, spinach, and salad mix.

The field work isn't quite over either. With the warm weather, we were able to prepare a lot of beds by composting and power harrowing (lightly tilling). Now, we'll cover them in silage tarps to protect them from erosion over the winter.

We are also busy attending Christmas markets with our honey. We'll be at Winterfest in Strathroy this Saturday and at the Covent Garden Christmas Market the first weekend of December.

Veggie Highlights This Week

Here are some new items to keep an eye out for this week:

Mini romaine lettuce
Broccoli pints
French Breakfast Radish
Spring onions
Acorn and Kabocha squash from HOPE

My favourite thing to do with fall veggies is to do a sausage and root veggie sheet pan bake. Carrots, squash, onions, garlic, fennel - really, you name it! - and cut sausage all tossed together in oil and herbs and baked in the oven. Mmm, it's really good with an apple baked in there too.

Enjoy the snow, or if you can't enjoy the snow, then enjoy the pleasure of a warm meal on a cold day.

Your farmer,

Kim
