2022 Farm Share Week 15 - Bye, Tomatoes - hello, Broccoli

Posted on September 12th, 2022 by Kim Barker

Welcome to week 15 of the Farm Share! We continue to transition from summer to fall crops and are now welcoming back the brassicas that we have missed since Spring! Broccoli, radish, cabbage, and bok choy are all back this week. This is one of the LAST WEEKS for tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and zucchinis, so keep that in mind when you customize your share.

On The Farm

This week, we bid goodbye to our tomatoes. It’s time to take them out of the greenhouses so we can fill them with crops for the late fall and winter. This is always a bittersweet time because we have nurtured the tomatoes since March. We were happy with our tomatoes this year, compared to previous seasons we had a much better yield and happier tomatoes overall. We continue to learn and perfect our techniques every season. We had a lot of cracking this year so that will be something we work on next year.

Taking out the tomatoes and prepping the hoophouses for our fall plantings is a big job. We will harvest the remaining tomatoes, both ripe and green, and keep them in our hoophouse to eat and harvest from until we run out. We’re going to keep two rows – one of large tomatoes, one of cherry tomatoes, so we may have a small harvest for awhile yet.

Veggie Highlights

We are very excited and happy about our BROCCOLI crop this fall! After two disappointing broccoli crops (last fall, and this spring), having a healthy, happy, and robust broccoli crop is really a joy. We brought one in for dinner, steamed it and tossed it in butter, and then we and the kids just gobbled it up. I think even our tomato-loving little ones were excited for a change in the vegetable palette. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchinis are on their way out of our Farm Share, so add them to your bags this week if you’re feeling nostalgic. Or, you can dive full into the world of fall crops – we have the return of radishes, cabbages, and bok choy.

Enjoy your veggies this week!
