Farm Share Week 7 - Ups and Downs

Posted on July 19th, 2021 by Kim Barker

Hi farm friends!

July is such a busy time here at the farm as we work to get our fall crops in the ground. All this rain has not made it easy to prepare the beds! So we are grateful now for some sunshine. Kale, cabbages, zucchini and cucumber (round 2) are on the roster for this week and the next, as well as the usual salad mix, lettuce, carrots and beans.

Farming is a series of ups and downs. There is lots of room on the farm for spiritual and philosophical learnings. Acceptance is the greatest lesson I have yet to learn, but with the help of the farm, each year I come closer.

So far this season I have had to accept that the peas failed to thrive and the beans have mostly rotted in the wet clay soil, and the onions got caught up in the weeds, and the tomatoes were planted late. We had a bit of a late start with them in the greenhouses so they're a bit behind unfortunately. Just starting to ripen now, hopefully within the next two weeks we'll be able to start picking them for you.

The farm also teaches perspective, and the power of focusing on the positive.

Our cauliflower and broccoli and cabbage harvest turned out wonderfully, our salad mix has been pretty consistently available so far all season, our rainbow chard is huge and beautiful, our beets are gorgeous and our cucumbers and zucchinis are flourishing.

So, forget the gym - find all our mental healing and physical fitness needs here on the farm. Make sure to take a break now and then to go the beach though.

Veggie Highlights

We have some shishito peppers this week! These might be something new for you, and you may become addicted to them once you try them. They are a thin-skinned sweet pepper popular in Japan. They are best cooked - blister them on a pan, roast them or grill them.  They cook quickly so it's an easy side dish.

Here's a recipe for blistered shishitos: https://cookieandkate.com/blistered-shishito-peppers-recipe/

RADISHES are also back and this is likely the last week for cauliflower. We'll have cabbage still for the next couple weeks.

 The STORE

If you haven't seen yet on our social media, our Farm Store is now open! THIS is a big accomplishment for us that has been a long time coming. It'll be open Mon-Tuesday 10-7, Thursday 3-7, Friday - Sunday 10-5.

Our 14 year old nephew Tristan is here for the summer - you might see him at pick up or the market!

Happy eating!

Your farmer,

Kim
