Online Farm Stand November 12th

Posted on November 9th, 2020 by Kim Barker

Welcome to the online Farm Stand for November 12th!

The weather this week has been absolute magic. We're very grateful for it is its given us a lot of opportunity to clean up our field. A few things we've been up to:

- Putting away insect netting, landscape fabric, drip tape, and row cover

- Clipping off old crops at the base - rather than uprooting them, this allows the soil to do its regular work of decomposition and all the good stuff that goes with it

- Taking out tomatoes in the greenhouses and adding more topsoil to improve drainage in the spring

- Reshaping, composting, and tarping beds to get them ready to plant in the spring

Produce This Week

Carrots, scallions, purple top turnips, hakurei turnips, green bell and gypsy peppers, cauliflower (smaller than last week), spinach (limited), mixed greens, romaine lettuce, broccoli (limited), hot peppers (a mix of habaneros and chilis) and watermelon radish. We also have Grandpa Wayne's honey available.

Watermelon Radish and Hakurei Turnips

In case you don't know about these, here's a bit of info:

Watermelon radish has a thick skin, as it is a storage radish. It's best prepared by thinly slicing it - we love adding it to salads, its absolutely gorgeous. You can also roast it which is quite delicious and tames the heat - no need to peel it ahead of time, as the skin will soften when roasting.

Hakurei turnips are very mild turnips that you can eat raw! You can cook them as well of course, they're nice roasted or braised.

Purple top turnips - these are an heirloom turnip with a stronger and spicier flavour than the hakurei. You can eat them raw too but they're more commonly cooked.
