Farm Share Week 7 - Planting Time!

Posted on July 20th, 2020 by Kim Barker

This time of year feels a bit like the beginning of spring again, in terms of all the planting that needs to be done in the field. This is the time when we start to plant our fall crops, so there's a bit of a hurry to get it all in the ground. In the next week or two we'll be planting parsnips, carrots, beets, beans, cabbage, lettuce, salad mix, fennel, and probably more that I've forgotten. It's also a time of abundant harvests that are keeping us busy too, so it's a bit of a juggling game around here.

The garlic is ready to harvest! A little bit earlier than last year, maybe due to the excessive heat we've had. We know it's ready when the majority of the leaves begin to brown. We'll pull it out of the ground, remove the first layer or two of skin to clean it up, and then leave it to dry on racks in our packhouse. If anyone would like to come out to give us a hand, send us an email or message on social media. We had plans to make this a big volunteer event like last year, but coronavirus had other plans. Still, if you'd like a day out on the farm getting a bit of a physical work out, there's enough space to do so with proper social distancing :).

There's lots of variety again this week - make sure to take a look at your share and take advantage of the ability to customize it! There are items you might not have received in your share but that are available for swapping in.

Old German tomato - great for tomato sandwiches!

We hope you're enjoying summer eating!
