Farm Happenings for Week of September 14th

Posted on September 14th, 2020 by Kelly Morris

OUR HOURS: Thursday, 3pm-7pm, Friday 11am-7pm, Saturday 9am-1pm. Like always, feel free to come during any of our open hours. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before we close to allow yourself time to gather your veggies.

WINTER CSA: Winter CSA signups are open! The Winter CSA will run for 6 weeks from mid-November through the week of Christmas. The Winter CSA will feature crops like hardy winter greens, roots, winter squash, sweet potatoes and much more. Log in to your Harvie account first, then choose "Place Order" under the My Farm section. Space is limited and registration ends Sept 30th or when we sell out.

FARM UPDATE: This week we're focusing on field clean up. Our first planting of tomatoes is done as well as the watermelons, and first varieties of winter squash so we're pulling up the plants and removing the irrigation lines and plastic that the crops were planted into. Then we'll work the soil and get cover crops into those fields. Our goal is to have as much of the farm planted with cover crops as possible before the end of the season. This protects the soil over the winter. When we mow those crops down next spring, they'll also add nutrients to the soil as they break down.

We'll also be focusing on weed control in some of our fall crops like spinach, lettuce, beets and radishes. We try to hoe the weeds when they are tiny so that we don't have as many to hand pull once they get bigger. Hoeing is much faster than hand weeding but the timing needs to be right. The veggie plants need to be big enough that you can tell them apart from the baby weeds and the soil can't be too wet or the hoed up weeds can just reroot themselves. We are generally better at hoeing in the fall then we are in the spring because we have fewer other tasks that need accomplished in the same time frame.

ADD ONS AND EXTRAS: If you have a fruit share, you know how delicious North Star's fruit is. If you don't have a fruit share, you're in luck! Their online store for ordering bulk fruit is now open. Order on Tuesday or Wednesday for pickup at Homefields along with your veggie share. The store will be open every week for the remainder of the season. You'll need to create an account the first time you place an order, but your info will be saved after that. Place your order here

UPCOMING TALKS IN THE FIELDS: Saturday, Sept 26 2-4:30pm - Native Garden Design & Build with Elyse Jurgen. ONLY 2 SPOTS LEFT! This workshop will take place outdoors and social distancing will take place. The first part of the workshop will explore the fundamentals of ecological site prep and plant placement, based on the plant species’ sociabilities (growing pattern and organization) to create a native garden design on the Homefields farm property. The remaining time will be a hands-on installation of the group’s crafted native garden design. More information and tickets can be found here.

Thank you from your farmers,
Katie, Elizabeth, Brad, Brian, Christina, Kelly, Angie and Matt
