Farm happenings for Week of June 29th

Posted on June 29th, 2020 by Kelly Morris

MODIFIED PICKUP HOURS THIS WEEK!

We are modifying our pickup schedule around the Fourth of July holiday. This week our pickup hours will be WEDNESDAY, July 1st 3pm-7pm, Thursday, July 2nd 3pm-7pm and Friday, July 3rd 11am-7pm. WE WILL NOT BE HERE ON SATURDAY, JULY 4TH!

PICK YOUR OWN:

New this week in the PYO field: BASIL! Its just big enough to pick, so please don't take more than you'll use for meals this week. You'll find the basil behind the first planting of sunflowers. The NASTURTIUM flowers in front of greenhouse 1 are a delicious and beautiful addition to a summer salad. An electrical issue caused our Squawk box to shut off over the weekend and the birds devoured most of the ripe berries. We corrected the issue on Monday but didn't include blueberries in shares this week due to this loss. There are still lots of unripe berries and we are hopeful that we can save them from the birds.

WINTER CSA:

Have you heard about our Winter CSA? For the first time we are going to be extending our growing season into December. The Winter CSA will run for 6 weeks from the middle of November until the end of December. It will feature crops like hardy winter greens, roots, winter squash, sweet potatoes and much more. Signups for the Winter CSA are happening now here.

UPCOMING TALKS IN THE FIELDS:

July 11th 1:30-3pm - Fungi and I with Dr. Laura Ramos-Sepulveda. As a plant pathologist (plant doctor) Dr. Ramos-Sepulveda will discuss how fungi cause disease in plants and how to prevent and treat these diseases. She will also talk about positive interactions between fungi and plants, an interaction that is called mutualistic symbiosis. Lastly she will speak about edible mushroom production in Pennsylvania which is the largest producer of mushrooms of any state. More information and tickets are available here.

August 8th 1:30-2:30pm - Pepper Power with Dominique Didier. Dominique Didier will introduce guests to the many varieties of peppers grown at Homefields, and will share recipes, tips, and tricks for preserving and pickling peppers, both hot and sweet. Samples will be provided. More information and tickets are available here.

Thank you and see you soon!
