Farm Happenings for February 15, 2024

Posted on February 10th, 2024 by Zach Hawkins

My dad and I spent most of the day working outside yesterday as the temperature climbed to 64 degrees—on February 9! We’ve been making use of the unseasonably warm weather to continue working on the construction of eight hoop houses. It’s remarkable how much more we can accomplish when we aren’t pausing every few minutes to warm up frozen fingers. I don’t think we can count on seeing that kind of warmth again for several more weeks, but we’re hoping for relatively mild weather as we try to finish the project by the end of the month so the hoop houses are ready for early plantings of salad greens, carrots, and potatoes.

We’ve also been busy planning for the summer season with our partner farmers in the region. The other day we stopped in to chat with Dan at Country Garden Farm in Roanoke and Andy at Hungry Dog Farm in Fort Wayne. We are fortunate to have these opportunities to visit other farms and talk shop—I always leave inspired. Plus, it was nice to spend some time in Dan’s heated greenhouse, where it feels like June, and bask in the return of the sun after weeks and weeks of cloudy days!

Your farmer,

Zach
