Farm Happenings for November 5, 2022

Posted on November 5th, 2022 by Zach Hawkins

This week our farm team harvested over 1000 pounds of root vegetables on Tuesday alone! Getting them out of the ground is only the first step in preparing them for winter storage. They also have to be washed and put away in the cooler, which is no small task. Our walk-in cooler is about as full as it can get, and Michael has been quite a puzzle master in finding room for all of the produce coming in from the garden.

Our stock of storage bins is maxed out, so we are using large woven bags for the root veggies that were harvested this week. The bags are nice because they can hold a lot of produce and they are breathable. This will keep everything fresh for long-term storage throughout the winter. In fact, isn’t unheard of for the first week of our summer CSA to include items like winter radishes that we harvested in the fall and stored through the winter!

While we will offer these storage crops during the few weeks remaining in our main CSA season, we'll also have plenty to offer through the winter. We need to determine some final details on our winter plans before sharing them with you, but keep your eyes peeled for an email with more details to come soon. And don’t forget to place your order for your Thanksgiving Turkey!!!
