Farm Happenings for June 4, 2022

Posted on June 4th, 2022 by Zach Hawkins

Cottonwood fluff is beginning to fill the air, and on our farm that can only mean one thing: Pizza Fridays are about to start! We look forward to welcoming our community out to enjoy Friday nights on the farm for another season. We have a great team of volunteers who will be stretching dough, sprinkling cheese, and sliding pizzas in and out of our wood-fired brick oven. And, fingers crossed, we may even have some guest chefs visit throughout the season.

If you haven’t been out to one of our pizza nights, we encourage you to make the trip. Each week there will be a “Harvest of the Week” specialty pizza along with your usual suspects: Pepperoni, Sausage, Ham, Margherita, and Veggie. The first specialty pizza will feature maple-marinated carrots with jowl bacon and spring onion. We can’t wait to try it! Special shout out to kitchen maestro (and CSA member!) Joshua Heckelsmiller for working the oven this season and coming up with the weekly specials.

We will continue to use our online ordering system to make ordering your pizza a breeze--and be on the lookout for pre-ordering options coming soon. For those that like to come up and place their order with Jeff, don’t worry, that is still an option, too.

This season, pizza patrons will be able to enjoy their meal tailgate-style in the numbered tailgate spots or picnic-style in a new common area in the west part of the lawn near our hoop houses (see picture). So don't forget your camp chairs, picnic blankets, folding tables, or whatever you need to create the perfect picnic experience. A reminder that Hawkins Farm is both a working farm and a private residence, so please pay attention to signs and roped off areas (so Kathy doesn't have to chase you away from her flowerbeds haha).

With the growing season in full swing and CSA deliveries underway, it's busy out here. We are really looking forward to pizza nights as a chance to slow down for a bit and enjoy the company of our community. Plus, how cool is it that the ingredients in the pizzas literally come from the land just outside the kitchen!?! Grab your pals and bring them out for a Pizza Friday!
