The baby chicks arrived on time, vaccinated, hungry, and thirsty.  As in past years, they chirped loudly as I drove them to the farm and played classical music.

For hens to be certified for organic production, they must be feed organic food from their very first meal. So when they arrive, we place them in a brooder which has warming lights, food, and water. I watch them until several have started to eat and drink. Most often they drink first because they are attracted to the red color of the waterers. And this was true also.

One adventurous chick was the first to find the water. She took a few sips and then promptly fell asleep right next to the waterer.

Wishing you safe, delicious, and healthy eating,

Judy for all the farmers at Harland's Creek Farm.
