Farm Shares for May 2, 2020 Glassine Bags

Posted on April 29th, 2020 by Judy Lessler

This the second week of our Harvie Farm Share program. We enjoyed seeing how you customized your shares last week. About 40 percent of you changed the contents of your bag or purchased extras. We are delighted we can now offer this service.

As you probably noticed last week, your farm share was delivered without any plastic packaging. Avoiding single-use plastics is one of our a key commitments to protecting our environment. We view it as going hand-in-hand with organic farming. You can read about some of the research underlying this decision at HCF Plastic Free Packaging.

Glassine Bags: There are storage implications associated with using the glassine bags for the tender greens. You cannot merely stick them in the refrigerator and think they will not dry out. This true for bunched greens and other items. They will need to be transferred to a storage container that holds humidity. This can be a plastic or glass storage unit in your refrigerator or one of the many plastic bags you accumulate from other sources. For example, I love Dave's Organic Bread, and it comes in plastic bags that I save. If I have a bag of arugula in a glassine bag, I and do not want to process it when I get it (wash and spin dry), I just slip it down into one of the many Dave's bread bags I have. I can reuse these over and over.  AND this is an excellent double plus for the environment--Dave's Bread bags do not go off to the landfill to persist to the end of time but rather have a long and productive life or many uses, and I have not brought a new plastic bag into my kitchen.

Also, there are multiple ways you can reuse the glassine bags, and finally, when they are tattered and frayed, you can add them to your compost pile or put them in the regular waste stream fully confident that somewhere there is a bacteria waiting to consume them.
