Farm Happenings for June 19, 2019

Posted on June 14th, 2019 by Joanna Winkler

Hi everyone! Summer crops have really started kicking in this week, and we're so excited! It does mean saying see you later to some of our favorite spring root crops, but don't worry - you can taste them again in the fall! Staying on top of harvesting is my main job each week, and now that summer is really here it's extra crucial. We harvest vegetables like summer squash almost every day to make sure we catch them at the right size because they grow so fast. A few crops have started producing in small quantities like potatoes and cucumbers, so stay tuned - they'll show up in your boxes very soon!

We got a nice amount of rain this week after a great deal of dry, sunny weather which made me think about our fellow farmers in the midwest. They're suffering from record rainfall at a crucial planting time, making it unclear whether they'll have any harvest for 2019. Last year was a very scary year for mid Atlantic farmers with record rainfall of our own - many of us thought, "is this the new normal?" This year's weather has been so kind to us, but the current weather extremes in other parts of the world remind us that we just happen to be very lucky right now. Climate change is really scary stuff. I don't mean to bum everybody out! But I do want to thank you for choosing to support local agriculture with your CSA share. Your choice helps to build a more resilient food economy in your own backyard, and that's truly transformative in our lives and for our planet!

Thanks for taking a minute for the bigger picture. Now here are some pictures from the week!

A big beautiful head!

A baby musk melon!

The first of our new potatoes with a kale caesar salad - eaten with gusto!

Thanks everyone, have a great week!
