Farm Happenings for July 2, 2019

Posted on June 28th, 2019 by Sarah Rider

Happy 4th of July!

As usual, we are happy to see a hectic June in the rear view mirror. The past week has been full of all possible farm jobs: weeding, cultivating, planting, seeding, harvesting, washing, packing...but, 'tis the season! The crew has been working incredibly hard in the heat: weeding, planting & harvesting. The horses have put in their time too, cultivating row after row of veggies & plowing in cover crops.

This week the crew completed the very first leg of the garlic harvest. 2 of the 14 rows were hung in the barn to dry before storage. The crop looks promising, and we are harvesting a bit earlier than usual to stagger the harvest and help improve storage quality.

We have started a private Facebook group just for 2019 CSA members. We'll try to keep up on member-specific news, veggie tips, and u-pick conditions on this site. Click HERE to join the group!

Whether you are traveling or staying at home, have a great holiday!

**This may be the last week for blueberries, depending on weather and & crop conditions, so get them while you can! **

In other fruit news, we are excited to be partnering with a farm down the road to offer an exclusive u-pick option for blueberries. Highfield Farm (formerly Spring Valley Farm) have several hundred mature bushes that are open for Flying Plow CSA members only.  These berries have not been sprayed with anything and the bushes were fertilized with certified organic fertilizer only this year. Unlike the u-pick crops on the farm, which are part of your share, these you will pay for at the time of picking. The farm accepts cash or credit cards. **Bring your own containers** Please leave pets at home. The farm does not have public bathrooms.

Starting Saturday, June 15th the hours at Highfield Farm are:

Wed 8 am - noon

Friday 2 - 6 pm

Saturday 8 am - noon

Highfield Farm address is 724 Conowingo Rd., Conowingo, MD 21918 (about 3.5 miles south of FPF on Rt. 1).

We expect the blueberry season to last about 1 to 2 more weeks, but that is completely dependent on the weather and crop conditions. You can also find pre-picked blueberries on the extras list this week! (One of the very rare times we will have non-FPF products on the list.)

If you have a delivered share and would like to order chicken or beef, the best way to do so is through our online store
