Farm Happenings for October 12, 2022

Posted on October 10th, 2022 by Kelly Peters

Welcome to week 21 of the 2022 Flat Tack Farm CSA program!

Watch Us Plant Part 1 of our Native Meadow this Friday

Join us this Friday afternoon at 2pm at the farm (October 14, 2022 - 9400 NE 134th St, Vancouver, WA 98662) for part one of our Native Meadow Pollinator Habitat Installation.  We are excited to partner with The Vancouver Bee Project to start this project.  We will be featuring an upland meadow seed mix from Heritage Seedlings featuring native Willamette valley forbs. Stop by the farm at 2 this Friday and we’ll talk through the extensive site preparation required for these installations. We are using a solarization/smothering technique to prepare for the planting that was installed early this spring. It's been smothering the grass all summer and is now ready for planting.  Fall is the best time to plant wildflowers in Vancouver!  The Vancouver Bee Project will be sharing some great info on increasing our local forage for bees and you can also get some seed samples from them starting the week of October 17 as part of their GROW NATIVE VANCOUVER campaign. For more info check out their website: https://www.vancouverbeeproject.org/

Interested in planting your own NATIVE URBAN MEADOWSCAPING?  Check out this Urban Meadowscaping Handbook prepared by the West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District. It shows so many great ways to incorporate meadow plants into your urban landscape.

Can't make it on Friday?  You can still pitch in by purchasing our Farm Honey to help fund the seed purchase, donate to The Vancouver Bee Project at their website, and/or sign the petition below to Help Vancouver become a Bee City USA Affiliate!  https://chng.it/hCQvKBZW2z

Bee City USA is a certification initiative created by the Xerces Society to guide cities or communities in the promotion of pollinator habitat which features native plants, provides nest sites, and is protected from pesticides. In order to protect the biodiversity of individual communities Bee City USA emphasizes planting native species to create resources for the highest number of pollinators in your area.

New items this week:

Carrots are finally ready to harvest again!  We also have our first round of "winter" lettuce - Frisee.  A crisp and frilled green from the Chicory family.  They have a slightly sweet and bitter flavor that takes dressing really well and adds texture to salads.  We mixed some of these into the salad mix last week.

The salad mix this week will have a mix of lettuces, arugula and mizuna.

Radishes are also just starting up again.

We hope you enjoy this weeks goodies!

Your farmers,

Kelly & Patrick
