Farm Happenings for July 6, 2022

Posted on July 4th, 2022 by Kelly Peters

Happy 4th of July!!!

Welcome to week 10 of the 2022 Flat Tack Farm CSA program!

What's Happening?!

It's beginning to look a lot like summer!  The squash and cucumbers are loving this heat and growing quickly.  Won't be long until fresh cucumbers are back!  This week we will have a handful of summer squash shares.  We're also getting all of our tomatoes trellised and the ones in the high tunnel are looking fantastic!  We planted our corn & watermelons last week, a little later than planned, but better late than never.  We should have a nice late summer crop of sweet corn.   This week marks the last delivery of our spring shares.  After this week there will be a short break and then we pick up again in August with lots of summer abundance!  See details at bottom of page.

Product Highlights

The Red Daikon radishes are finally sized up and ready to enjoy!  They're nice and sweet with a little spice.  Great to grate on top of salads, slice and dip in hummus or just eat like a carrot :)

We've got a couple of other surprise items this week-  Josta berries and red currants!  The Josta berry is a cross between a currant and goose berry.  They have a delicious musky flavor and are much bigger than currants.  They almost look like a little grape.  Great eaten fresh!

Currants are great for making jams or sauces.  They are also used in a lot of cocktails-  You can do a quick simple syrup with them by adding to a sauce pan with equal amounts water and sugar.  Cook until they break down slightly, strain and refrigerate.  Will last up to 30 days in the fridge.  You can then mix them into beverages, use as a sauce topping or even as a salad dressing with some vinegar added.

The fresh lavender is also blooming finally!  We will have white and purple bunches available to add on to your share.  Another great summertime beverage- LAVENDER LEMONADE!!!  Add in some mint for an extra refreshing beverage.

Lyndsay from Sprout & Blossom also has tons of beautiful Dahlias blooming.  This week you can add on a bunch of Dahlias for $10 or a seasonal bouquet for $15.

Another great summer recipe is Watermelon and Chocolate Mint salad!  You can mix with lettuce, or just enjoy on it's own!  It's so refreshing and sweet it doesn't need any dressing.  This is one of our summer go-to's when we're drained from working in the heat.

Other Reminders

We also wanted to remind everyone that we are going to be taking July 10-31st off to focus on farm fall preparation.  We've always struggled with getting our spring beds turned over and ready to plant fall crops on time when we're doing markets and harvesting constantly.  This season, we built in a little summer break to help us with these tasks.  Everyone should have those dates "skipped" or not showing on your delivery schedule.  Lyndsay of Sprout and Blossom Farm will still be hosting a booth at the Vancouver Farmers Market for those wanting to still get local farm grown produce.  She usually shares a booth with us and will be at the same spot we are located in.  Booth number 55 on Ester Short park side of the street (for those who haven't visited us yet).

We hope you enjoy this week's abundance and thank you for supporting your local farmers!
