Farm Happenings for September 17, 2021

Posted on September 13th, 2021 by Kelly Peters

What's New?

Tomatoes for Days! Typically in farming high temperatures are a blessing. However, this year's excessive heat seems to have added enough stress to put off the ripening process until the last couple of weeks. As such, we are very nearly swimming in tomatoes now!

We also have tomato preserving boxes available!  They come with 10# of vine ripened tomatoes and 2 bulbs of fresh garlic.  Excellent for all of your sauces, salsas, and other preserving needs.

Kitchen Notes

Here's a few tomato recipes we LOVE!

A delicious brunch or BFD treat!  Tomatoes, local ground lamb from Reister Farm , peppers, stewed together with a poached egg dropped into the stew.  Mmmmmmm.  So decadent and delicious!

Lamb Shakshuka Or the Turkish Version: Turkish Menemen

There are very few things better in this world than a vine ripened tomato! One of those things is taking some, or all of those vine ripened tomatoes and smoking them over some hardwood charcoal and cherry wood until the juice in the pan just starts to turn into syrup, take that goodness and place in a blender with smoked garlic, a few tablespoons of olive oil (with, or without truffles), some medium hot peppers, a fist full of fresh Basil,  balsamic vinegar and salt to taste. That can be put on almost anything...preferably with fresh mozzarella!

Another great idea is Gazpacho!  A cold soup made of tomatoes and cucumbers blended with fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil and a touch of balsamic or red wine vinegar.  Excellent for a raw food diet and with all of the great nutrients packed into this soup- you're sure to ward off any nasties.  We always add in lots of extra garlic.

Featured Item

Rock Melons from Volehalla Farm! The ultimate late summer treat, ultra sweet and juicy, always best eaten fresh. These melons are far tastier than the standard Cantaloupe and with much more flavor and sweetness.
