Farm Happenings for August 27, 2021

Posted on August 24th, 2021 by Kelly Peters

It almost feels like fall is upon us!  The cool evenings and cloudy mornings are a nice reprieve from the hot, dry summer we've been having.  Some of the pumpkins and winter squash are almost ready to harvest?!  In August...  So early!  There are lots of new items available this week.  Two of this weeks stars are members of the Brassica (or Cabbage/Broccoli) family.  They are both root veggies:

1.) Kohlrabi- Sometimes called German Turnip- which is actually not a turnip at all!  It is delicious eaten raw or you can cook it.  Here's a great video on how to prep this veggie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sclulbRk3EU  All I normally do is peel and cut into thin "chip" slices.  Dip in some hummus or I also love grating into salads.  It's delicious (similar taste to broccoli) and has a nice crunchy & juicy texture.

2.) Rutabaga - aka Swede are a cross between a turnip and a wild cabbage.  They look similar to a turnip, but less round in shape.  The flavor is sweeter and a bit more mild than a turnip.  They are wonderful for roasting, mashing, or making fries.  With half of the carbohydrates as potatoes and high vitamin C and fiber content, they are a great alternative to potatoes.  One of our favorite ways to eat rutabagas is mashed with potatoes.  We call it Rutabagatata and it's absolutely divine!!!   Here is a helpful video with preparation tips and 3 different recipes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CkX8kvPxYQ

Italian Plums from our neighbors down the road are also on the list for this week. These purple beauties are a little more jammy and earthy than the yellow and red plums.  Some people call them prunes (the dried version.)

Tomatoes are also rocking right now!!! We will have lots of different varieties coming on this week.  Both from our outdoor plants and the plants in the "high tunnel" greenhouse.

We're digging the rest of our potatoes tomorrow and will soon have a plethora of different varieties, shapes and sizes!

Enjoy this weeks bounty!
