Farm Happenings for October 15, 2020

Posted on October 12th, 2020 by Kelly Peters

We brought in more winter squash before the rains over the weekend.  Butternut squash, Tromboncino Squash (the winter version), Pie Pumpkins, Mongogo Guatemalan Pumpkins, and more!  They are curing in the green house to help harden the skin and sweeten the flavor.  This usually take 3-7 days depending on how warm it is.  After the curing process, winter squash can sit on your counter for months.

This week we have Spaghetti Squash from our farm and Sweet Meat/ Blue Hubbard Squash available from our neighbors a few properties down the road.  We will also have a few bags of heirloom King Apples for making sauces/pies.  More roots and fall greens will also be ready this week- mustard greens, watermelon radishes and rainbow carrots!

With the heavy rain over the weekend, many other crops are now finished for the season, including the tomatoes.  There will be a small handful available from the green house, but the field tomatoes will be pulled out this week to make way for our new high tunnel that we will be installing.  We just received a grant for a 100' long by 40' wide high tunnel (aka tall green house) that will help us extend our season, have more control over crop moisture levels and increase our heated area for those hot peppers and other heat loving crops.  We are extremely excited to be approved for this grant as it will really help us in the next coming years.  There will be lots of growth in the upcoming years and we are very excited to be adding in more fruiting crops as well as taking over management of a small orchard on the property next to us.

It's hard to believe that there are only 3 weeks left for our season!!!  We are so grateful and thankful to you, our members, for supporting us this season and helping us continue to grow and feed our community.  After the end of October we will be selling veggies via the Vancouver Farmers Market online store.  It's called LocalLine and opens weekly from Monday to Thursday evening for pick up on Saturday at the downtown Vancouver Farmers Market.  Bookmark the page here: https://www.localline.ca/vanwafarmersmarket  For more information on how the store works, check out the Vancouver Farmers Market website here: https://www.vancouverfarmersmarket.com/

We also wanted to remind everyone that there is one final Fall Harvest Cornucopia Share that you can purchase as an add on.  This is an extra large box full of veggies for the holiday season.  It is delivered to you (or you may pick it up at the farm) on November 20th.  There are only a handful of shares left, if you're interested be sure to reserve your share online before they sell out! As a note- make sure to skip the first section that is for the normal veggie share and CLICK the ADD ON's option.  That will bring up the fall harvest share. Cornucopia Share selection

Thank you and we'll see you on Friday/Saturday!

Your farmers,

Kelly & Patrick
