Farm Happenings for May 15, 2020

Posted on May 12th, 2020 by Kelly Peters

This last week was a hot and productive week!  We got the back garden area all prepared and beds shaped for added crops.  We had 2 volunteer days and with the help were able to plant out summer squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, and get lots of beds ready for more crops.  We also put green beans, arugula, mizuna, radishes, cilantro and dill seeds in yesterday.  We use a small 2 - wheeled tractor made by BCS.  It has been indispensable for helping us mow old crops, trench and shape beds, and harrow (a low-tillage implement).  The picture above is Patrick using the rotary plow to make raised beds in the back garden.  We decided to re-shape the back area this year to a curved bed on contour of the hill.  This should help retain moisture and prevent erosion. It's definitely a work out- especially when you hit big soil chunks or the tractor wants to pull a different direction.  When you're a farmer, you don't really need a gym!
