Nathan on the Fall Harvest!

Posted on October 1st, 2021 by Featherstone Farm

Happy October to all of you! We are in full Fall season down here at the farm and boy o boy does it feel good. We have been blessed with some superbly warm days that have made work in the field quite pleasant, and have also given our crops a much needed boost of life. It's always an odd time of year where we all show up to work in the early dark morning with our hoodies and jackets bundled up and by noon are down to sweat soaked t-shirts! You certainly won't hear anyone complaining about it around here though, a boost of plant growth at this time of year is just what the doctor ordered for our fields. Strong sun rays fattening up our carrots, sizing up our cabbages, and replenishing our picked over Kale fields . . . all such big wins for us this time of year.

Our storage crops are looking strong this year and we are starting to see our big storage coolers fill up with bins and bins of product stacked to the ceiling. Many of the beets, turnips, and radishes that we have put away already will not be taken out now until late February for winter CSA boxes!

It is so satisfying to be in the "home stretch" of the growing season down here, watching the fruits of our labor come in. It's hard not to beam with satisfaction and accomplishment as the carrots, squash, and cabbage come rolling in from the field day after day. I think back to all the work we put in to make this happen. The thousands of hours of planning, planting, cutivating, hand weeding, and watering to make turn the tiny seeds into beautiful vegetables! It's also a personal reminder of the ever moving march of time. Another season come and gone in what feels like a blink of the eye.  I remember even a few short weeks ago desperately wanting to jump forward into October to be in a more predictable, calm season. Now I beg time to slow down so I can soak in the moment as the sunlight gets less and less everyday. What foolishness to wish for our lives to speed up or slow down for our satisfaction. It's a true gift in farming to be connected so directly to the seasons and how they shape our days, months, years. It is a constant reminder of how little control I/we have, how all I can truly do is my best and enjoy the moment I am given.

Thanks for coming along with us this season from Spring lettuce, to Summer Tomatoes, to Fall Squash. We are so grateful for your support.

Thank you,

Nathan
