It’s hard to believe it’s already July!   Almost all of the summer crops are planted and the harvest is starting to ramp up.  We can't wait for things in your box to change from mostly leafy green items to the fruiting crops like cucumbers, zucchinis and tomatoes.  And sweet corn should be here soon, which is always a highlight!  Here are some views of the fields for you:

One of our green cabbage fields!

Pretty pepper field!

Gorgeous kale field with fog!

One of my favorite parts of work and life on the vegetable farm is the changing of the seasons and how our work and also our community shifts through different months. Early in the season we run things with a small crew of local folks and a handful of Spanish speakers who come seasonally and specialize in tractor work and leading crews. When they arrive, we all come out of our winter cocoons to reconnect and welcome spring planting and seeding.

With this small group, we work closely as a team, learning new skills and pushing to tackle big spring projects efficiently. We’ve become a close group and I really appreciate the strong team we’ve built, the camaraderie, and warm evenings sharing tacos or grilling out after work before the big crews arrive.

In mid-June, the rest of our workers come from Guanajuato, Mexico to help with the growing amounts of harvests. The sound of Mexican music blares from the trucks and the warehouse and every kitchen window. It’s so nice to have everyone back! Right now, the farm is wildly busy as we continue to plant all of our fall brassicas, hand weed, irrigate, and harvest. The work we put in this spring is paying off and it’s really rewarding to see everything ripening up in the field....and on it's way to you, soon!

Today we're planting asparagus for the years ahead!  Here's a look:

Thank you again for being a part of our farm community. Your support allows us to do this work that we love, to care for the rich soil on which we grow and to feed so many people in Minnesota!
