Happy Fall Harvest at the Farm!

Posted on September 19th, 2019 by Featherstone Farm

Fall is upon us! The farm is in shifting mode, moving away from high summer crops like tomatoes and melons into fall harvests. Broccoli, Winter Squash, and Cabbage picks now consume our harvest days. T-shirts are traded out for hoodies and the sun is setting at 7 o’clock!! This time of year always sneaks up on us, but I must admit that it is one of my favorite times of the harvest.

Here are some updates from the farm: We have officially started harvesting our delicious fall carrots, which are coming in your boxes this week! We are about half way through our winter squash harvest and all our varieties are looking great and should be sweet and filling. Our broccoli and cabbage plantings are also both looking strong for this late fall! And finally our hand root harvest has already brought in over half of our storage roots for the winter ahead!

The final big update--and most exciting one-- is we have planted our first high tunnel to spinach and kale for this Winter's CSA. We are so excited at how it is turning out and hope you will join us for a taste of fresh local greens during the Minnesota winter!

As i’m writing this we are preparing for our annual farm harvest party. Complete with a carnitas roast, gathering for supper, and general celebration for our hard work as the season shifts.
Yes the season is shifting and although we are far from the year being over there is an air of change around the farm. The Spanish speakers already talking about looking forward to their first days back home, the storage coolers filling up with product for the winter ahead and the clearing and cover cropping of fields all pointing to the finish line.

Thanks for all your support this summer! There are 5 weeks of this season left, with you last delivery on either October 23rd or 24th.  Don't want it to end?  Then join us today for our winter program, which starts on November 6th.
