2023 CSA Week 5

D&V Organics CSA

Week 5

The warm weather over the past week has helped to push along our zucchini for this week's share.  All of the warm weather crops are growing well during this early heat wave.  We have seen some fast growth on our first field tomatoes, onions, melons and peppers.  Unfortunately, the heat really did not suit the broccolini well, so we will be finished harvesting that until later on in the Fall.  It is looking like we'll have another round of cauliflower coming along this week, as well as some regular broccoli in a couple weeks.  We are also anticipating our first field cucumbers this week, but probably not much volume in time for the CSA.

In other news around the farm, we just received our plant material to plant sweet potatoes.  The most economical way for us to grow sweet potatoes is to purchase "slips", which are sprouts from sweet potatoes. We will plant the slips into the ground and grow the plants until September when the sweet potatoes are ready to harvest.  After harvest, the sweet potatoes need to cure in a warm and moderately humid environment to finish developing their sugary sweetness and a harder skin.  This is a new crop on the farm, so we are looking forward to experimenting this year.

Enjoy,

Derek and Crew
