D&V Organics CSA

Week 2

We hope everyone is making good use of the produce items in last week's share.  As each week progresses, so are the crops around the farm.  On the horizon, crops like broccoli, broccolini, cauliflower, fennel, zucchini, cucumbers and cabbage are slowly getting bigger, and we anticipate those reaching maturity over the next few weeks.  Our days have been hurried, as we have been slowly increasing our seasonal crew size with additional people to help with all the harvesting and crop maintenance, as well as continuing with planting each week so we have a steady supply of produce from the fields.  In our largest greenhouse, we have a beautiful crop of tomatoes coming along.  The greenhouse tomatoes were planted back in early April, and we have been maintaining them ever since.  Each week we work in the greenhouse to prune off excessive growth, increasing the plants ability to focus on growing tomatoes on a slightly more compact plant.  We also use strings from overhead, clipped to the plants to keep them growing upright and allowing for ease of harvesting.  Similar measures are used in the field tomatoes, of which our first planting was set in the ground last week.

Enjoy,

Derek and Crew
