D&V Organics CSA Week 21

D&V Organics CSA Week 21

As we move further along into Fall, we'll have more cool season vegetables reaching maturity in the field.  This week, we are excited to add Spinach, Kale, Watermelon Radish and baby Mustard Greens onto our harvest list for the week.  We have a big planting of broccoli/sprouting broccoli and cauliflower getting bigger in the field and showing signs of forming the edible florets. It will only be a matter of weeks before it's ready to harvest!  Broccoli is relatively easy to grow when the temperature gets consistently cool, such as in the Fall.  The flavor of most produce is enhanced as it gets colder, especially when a frost settles on the plants.  From what we can tell, we have some time before a frost event, however, plants concentrate sugars in their exposed portions during a frost event, protecting themselves from the destructive forces of a frost.  Not all plants survive frosts, as frosts tend to rupture the cells within the plants tissues, causing them to eventually die.  But nearly all of the crops we grow this time of year can tolerate a moderate frost, around 26-28F.  Below is a picture of our first Fall Broccoli and Cauliflower.

Enjoy,
