D&V Organics CSA Week 17

D&V Organics CSA Week 17

After last week, we are officially done with our tomato season.  Between the cold Spring and a super rainy August, we have been less than satisfied with this year's tomato crop.  As mentioned before, we put a lot of effort into growing tomatoes, from seed to finished product, it takes more time and money to grow than any other crop on the farm.  So when we have a less than stellar season, it is a real disappointment for us.  One change coming for next season is a new, large greenhouse, which will house an early tomato crop on the farm.  We are in the planning stages of preparing a site on the farm so that we can build a 34' x 144' greenhouse this Fall/Winter.  Growing tomatoes in a greenhouse gives us more control of temperature, moisture and other environmental factors.

New to shares this week is the first of our Fall radishes and baby greens.  Our baby Mizuna is like a more mild version of our baby arugula.  Both are triple washed and bagged, so they should be ready to eat.  The radishes this week will include the slightly spicier French Breakfast Radish and Pink and Purple salad radishes. We just began harvesting all of our new items late this past week to bring to our weekend farmer's markets, and are excited to be bringing these items back for the cool seasons.  Next week, we'll be on track to begin harvesting some sweet and smooth Japanese salad turnips, and quite possibly the first little gem lettuce of the Fall.

Enjoy,

Derek & Vicky
