Farm Happenings for August 31, 2021

Posted on August 26th, 2021 by Lindsey Visser

It is a time of transition here at the farm.

The kids are heading back to school.  The summer crops are producing well, but as we move to cooler nights they will slow down and we will start to focus on fall crops. The last of the fall crops have been planted in the field.  We are transitioning the greenhouses to winter growing.  Soon we will be getting the summer crops in the field cleaned up and cover crops planted.  Allowing the fields to rest.

I love fall.  Spring is exciting, the new life and getting the season going again, but fall is my favorite.  Most farmers reach a point of burn out in August.  Months of 80 - 90 hour weeks start to wear on us.  Many of the crops that we have been taking care of the past few months are ready. While it is so great to see our hard work at its peak, the harvest lists are long.  At the same time we are working on crop maintenance for the summer crops and then the planting and taking care of the fall crops.  Something about September breaths new life (the cooler days definitely help!) The days are a bit shorter feeling like we have more time for rest.  The beauty of fall!  The all of the colors and big beautiful fall clouds.

What season is your favorite?
