Farm Happenings for March 18, 2021

Posted on March 16th, 2021 by Grady Seale

This mornings first harvest of asparagus! I was headed to check the fields this morning and spotted some of these delicious favorites and had to stop and pick them. While I am sorry to tell you that we may not have enough to offer in the boxes, I want to encourage you to buy some asparagus sets (now is the time you can typically find them) and try planting them at home. One of the easiest things to grow and so good to eat, asparagus crowns grow and produce more and more every year for 10-15 years! Plant them in well drained soil about 3" deep and cover and they will start to sprout around this time of year, but don't go to picking any of them the first year they sprout. They will grow 2-3 tall green ferns and when winter comes around they will seem to die off and you can easy break the ferns off. Keep the area relatively clean or clean it up in mid February and they will begin to sprout, 2nd year sprouts can be picked and eaten but do not pick it all. While picking does increase growth you want some of the ferns to grow up again. By the third year you can pick it all and it will challenge you with its fast growing nature. Very fun and easy to do! I hope my 3rd (small) crop does good this year and I am able to offer some to our members!
