I hope everyone had a good Christmas! We are just starting to pick some Green Garlic out of the field. We call it green garlic bc we pick it before it starts to form in pods. We typically plant the garlic pods in mid-August to early September and normally they are ready in mid to late January (so a little early this year) When growing regular garlic it usually takes about 9 months for pods to form and then after harvest you have to dry them out. It is a long process that often in Louisiana, doesn't yield much. The green garlic resemble leeks but once you cut into one and taste you will know its Garlic! About the farm
Covey Rise Farms is located in Husser, LA just north of New Orleans in central Tangipahoa Parish and is part of the Covey Rise Sportsman's Retreat. The farm started growing vegetables on 10 acres in 2009 and has expanded to over 60 acres at present. The farm not only grows multiple varieties of over 30 types of vegetables, but in recent years has added fruit trees and flowers. Our produce is enjoyed at various types of restaurants in New Orleans and surrounding areas, from the finest restaurants to quaint neighborhood cafes and everything in between and by our local produce/CSA members.
