Farm Happenings for June 8, 2022

Posted on June 3rd, 2022 by Mike Finger

Hi, Friends:

Week three arrives at an increasingly vibrant and thriving moment for the farm and its crops.  Abundant rain, at times a bother, but really a great blessing has helped settle our transplants and support good germination of our direct seeded crops. Increased warmth (wow! we've eclipsed 65 degrees several times of late) has boosted growth noticeably. It's been great weather for slugs, and they have kicked us in our horticultural shins quite a lot.  Still, with warmth and moisture most the crops are outgrowing the pests, though the weeds are quite happy with the conditions as well. Our main field crew of Debbie, daughter Arden, Lauren, and Ashley have done some amazing work pruning and trellising the peas and the tomatoes, and have developed an effective and nuanced understanding of weed control using the several mechanical tools we've now have in our tool box.

This week's harvest promises to be very green, though thanks to our Skagit farm partners, we'll have a few new items to add to the list (alas, still green is Kale).  The near future is looking much more varied (and delicious): snow and sugarsnap peas are setting pods, broccoli and broccoli raab are developing heads, new carrots are sizing up, kohlrabi bulbs are swelling ~ many of our earlier crops are gaining speed and girth, heading for harvest pretty soon, we think.

This week's customization period ends at 10 p.m. Sunday evening.  Please contact us if you have any questions about customizing your share or managing your membership generally.

Thank You so much for your membership and support of local agriculture.

Yours,

Mike, Kim, and Crew

This Week's Picture: Lauren and Arden in the west greenhouse molding the tomato plants into lean and healthy producers of delicious fruit (flowers are present and the first fruit has set).

P.S. Thank You, Thank You for returning your share boxes to your pick up site (gently folded flat without tears or other destruction). Cardboard has made a huge jump in price this year, so it's never been so important to us to be able re-use the boxes we have a few times, thereby spreading the cost out and reducing the new purchases we need to make. Thank You!
