Farm Happenings for October 7, 2020

Posted on October 2nd, 2020 by Mike Finger

We managed to bring in about half the winter squash crop by week's end, washing and packing the squash fruit in the field, before moving them to our propagation house for curing and storage.  We sprayed the dirt off of each squash and then dipped them in sanitized water in an effort to discourage the skin rots that can afflict squash and shorten storage life. We'll keep a fan on them in the propagation house to further facilitate good storage conditions.  We haven't yet started sowing cover crops on the fields, but we are chomping at the bit to do so. This year we'll use a rye / vetch mix mostly, a fast growing blend that can germinate well and make fast growth even as the days shorten and cool.

This Week's "Extra" list from which you can purchase additional items or swap them from ones on your proposed harvest for the week: Shiitake mushrooms, Cilantro, Green Savoy Cabbage, Broccoli Raab, Slicing Tomatoes, and Basil.

Thank You for your membership!
