Farm Happenings for September 23, 2020

Posted on September 18th, 2020 by Mike Finger

The air finally cleared Friday and harvest was once again a happy if demanding time.  We hope forecasts of rain prove true, especially for those areas in the West still burning.  For now, we are grateful we can see the gentle curves of Mt. Sumas once again and pull in a deep breath without thinking of its equivalent in cigarettes ~ not really anyone's vision of organic farming!

This week we'll pull in the last of the bulb onions, a late planted bed that finally sized up nicely.  And the Winter Squash too will be cut, washed, and moved to the our propagation greenhouse to cure for a week or so before we begin distributing to our members.  This is all to say that Fall has joined us and summer is fading, a melancholy event that always seems to hit us as a surprise ~ "oh, what? We can't plant any more broccoli?  What's this yellow on the cucumber leaves?"  Thoughts of  morning crew meetings held in dim light with rain gear always close at hand are with us, and we sigh that another season of heat and light is passing.  It's been a variable, somewhat uneven growing season that still produced some excellent harvests and many a lovely, even tempered day for cultivating crops.

We hope you enjoy this week's harvest.

Mike, Kim, and Crew

P.S.:

We've added these crops to this week's "Extras" list from which you can swap items on your harvest estimate or purchase as additions to your share:  Beets, Cilantro, Dill, Parsley, and Onions

This Week's Photo: Arden and Ashley team up to bring in a lug of bush beans for Saturday's Farmers' Market Harvest. Those smiles are genuine: they enjoy and are dedicated to bringing fresh, local food to our community.
