Farm Happenings Week 1 Fall CSA, 2021

Posted on October 29th, 2021 by Aspen Moon Farm

Welcome to AMF Fall CSA!  We are so happy you have joined us for 7 weeks of great local food!  Please read these Happenings each week for lots of good info.  See Important CSA News below.  These are Pie Pumpkins pictured above and they are included as an option in this week's shares.  Two varieties: "Winter Luxury"- left with characteristic webbed skin, winner for best tasting baking pumpkin;  "New England"- right, also great flavor, stores much longer on the counter.  Both are fantastic for baking into pie or pumpkin bread.  These can be used for your Thanksgiving if desired.  Some will store well on the counter for a few more weeks.  Some may start to soften, in which case you can bake it up promptly, puree it, and freeze the pumpkin pulp for when you are ready to bake (also a great idea for getting nice and prepped for your Thanksgiving meal).  This is all we have of the pie pumpkins this Fall and we have saved every single one for our CSA members. We also have a new favorite winter squash this week in limited supply called Futsu!  It is so cute and small and has a deep orange extremely sweet flesh.  Let us know how you like it!

We are so happy to have a carrot mix in shares this week.  Each share will have a mix of Chantenays (yep the fat ones that are also our sweetest carrot) and the lovely Purple Dragon complete with a beautiful sunrise coloring on the inside.  The Purple Dragons sweeten up even more when they are cooked to the point that they get confused with sweet potatoes!  This will be the only appearance of the Purple Dragon carrots in Fall CSA.  Plenty more orange carrots to come.

Next week you can expect Delicata in shares. Our well-loved Heirloom Blonde Acorn will be in Week 3.  For Thanksgiving and beyond we will have Butternut and Kabocha available.

Important CSA news!  Because we have had an extremely minimal Winter squash crop this year, we have purchased Certified Organic Butternut and Kabocha from our dear Farmer friend Dave and at Full Circle Farm right up the road in order to provide for our Fall CSA.  Full Circle is all Certified Organic and Dave has been a farmer in this area for 20 some years.  We have great respect for his practices and are grateful for this partnership.  This is the first time in all of our years that we have purchased in produce for CSA.  We pride ourselves with only offering Aspen Moon produce to our members and community, but this has been a different year in many ways and it became necessary.  We are grateful for a strong web of local farmers who support each other.  We will always be fully transparent about where your produce comes from.  The Butternut and Kabocha squash will be the only items not grown right here at Aspen Moon Farm.
