Farm Happenings Week 12, 2021

These tomatoes are amazing!  Please join us in reveling in the peak of tomato season!  Eat them sliced raw with salt, on a sandwich, in Caprese salad, sliced raw on pizza instead of sauce, etc....  It's important to know your tomato in order to get the best flavor.  We grow so many kinds....  We grow heirlooms in our hoop house: Black Krim, Purple Cherokee, Brandywine, Pineapple, and Valencia.  Out in our field we grow: Pink Berkeley Tie-dye, Green Zebra, and several types of red slicers.  Heirlooms and Berkeleys  need to be fully ripe for best flavor.  You'll want to give them a gentle squeeze and they should feel a bit soft to the touch like a ripe peach.   Store tomatoes on your counter away from direct sunlight.  Once you cut the tomato, store any extra in the fridge for a day or 2.  If you end up with some juicy extra ripe tomatoes, try crushing them whole (minus the stem) into a pot for a quick pasta sauce; add balsamic, basil, and goat chevre- YUM! No need to peel the tomatoes, they can be put through a blender if you want a smoother texture.  Some of our red slicers are quite firm and really hold their shape.  These are great for pico de gallo, or great for scooping out the middle and stuffing with cheese, rice, and fresh herbs.   Feel free to ask one of our farmers at pickup if you need help determining the ripeness of your tomato.  Happy summer!!
