Farm Happenings Week 13

Posted on August 21st, 2020 by Aspen Moon Farm

Sweeeet peppers!  Great grilled, roasted, or stuffed.   Or chop them up raw mixed with chopped tomatoes and cucumber for a refreshing crunchy salad.  Here at Aspen Moon we grow red, yellow, and orange bells as well as red and yellow "Carmen" types, which are an Italian pointed bell pepper with even sweeter flavor.  These are grown in our hoop house so they stay a little warmer at night and they have a little bit of protection from direct sun which can cause burn spots.  Not to be confused with "greenhouse" or "hot house", our hoop house crops are still grown in the Earth with natural sunlight and no supplemental heat.  It is basically like a big cold-frame.  The spicy peppers grow great out in our fields and they are also coming in strong.  It is a great time to do some roasting of Anaheims, Poblanos, and Pueblo chilis.  These can be added to ffresh salsa, quesadilla, scrambled eggs, sandwiches, etc...  We will have a few more varieties of smaller sweet peppers coming in from the fields soon as well.

Melons are also now in abundance. These "muskmelons" are commonly referred to as cantaloupe and they taste so similar that most people don't know the difference, or care because they are just so darn sweet that you can't think of anything else when you bite into these juicy refreshing melons....  ooh sweeet summer!
