Farm Happenings for August 11, 2020

Posted on August 7th, 2020 by Kyla Byers
First off....check out RED CURRANTS and CHICKEN EGGS on our Extra's List this week! We're pretty excited to have these in stock this week and hope you are too!

We also want to tell you a little about Spring Creek Farm. We are constantly checking in with the farmers who grow the crops for us. We do this because we believe understanding the processes, successes and challenges of our farmers is critical to building lasting relationships with them. We also want to bring you closer to the farms whose products you are eating!

Last week we visited Ben Swimm, the Farm Manager of Spring Creek Farm in Palmer. Spring Creek Farm is an educational and experiential farm associated with Alaska Pacific University. The farm provides the space necessary to pioneer a robust and resilient Alaskan food system by training farmers, researching innovative techniques, and growing some incredible vegetables using organic methods.

During our visit it was raining and cool, the sole walk-behind tractor had just broken down but Ben and his crew didn’t miss a beat. They were hard at it; weeding, seeding, tilling, irrigating, and harvesting items like arugula, beets, bok choy, carrots, kohlrabi, cabbage and plenty more. They'll be harvesting some of these and more for your boxes next week!

Farmers don’t stop when equipment breaks and the weather isn’t cooperating. They just can’t. There’s a tough brand of resilience in every small vegetable farmer. We are so happy to call Spring Creek Farm one of our farms and help connect you with their amazing produce.
