CSA Week 7 2020

Posted on June 11th, 2020 by Trish Cirelli

This week's shares have a few exciting surprises! We've brought a few items for the first time this season- carrots, rainbow swiss chard, AND garlic scapes!! Stay tuned for garlic scape recipes and tips on what to do with the scapes this week.

Some of you may be asking, "What's a garlic scape?!?" Garlic scapes are the stalks that grow from the bulbs of garlic plants, they're above ground while the garlic bulbs are still maturing below the soil. Scapes will eventually grow longer and flower if left on the plant long enough, but you will be receiving younger, and therefore more flavorful, garlic scapes this week. Cutting them off at this point in the season has two different benefits- first, we get to enjoy the delicious garlic flavor in our meals while we wait for the garlic to be ready, and second- cutting the garlic scapes will increase the bulb production because the plant can put its energy into the underground growth. I hope that you all enjoy them this week!

Also- if you are adding additional items to your shares- on your pickup day, please be sure to check for extra bags and/or boxes containing your additional purchases. Additional items will be labeled with your name, with a brightly colored label, and if the items are perishable, they may be in a cooler or refrigerator at your chapter/pickup locations. If something is ever missing when you are picking up, give us a call right away and we can help get things fixed for you. And if there is ever anything you need, please don't hesitate to reach out either by phone at (908) 879-7189 or by email to trish@alstedefarms.com.

We hope that you all enjoy this week's shares!
