Farm Happenings for Aug 1, 2022

Posted on July 29th, 2022 by Deidre Dealy

We are making some harvest estimates this week on items that we haven't picked yet this year. We are trying to be conservative because we know how disappointing it can be when we say we will have strawberries and green beans...and we don't! Praying for an abundant harvest! If we come up short, be gracious please. It's always hard to know exactly how much we will be harvesting each week of every item.

The tomatoes have some sun scald on them this week. This looks like yellow shoulders that don't ripen properly. It is one of those nasty side effects of the intense heat we had. It should improve as we move further along.

This week we will usher in a new month and a new phase of summer! I know, everyone is talking about going back to school, but it's far from over out there! Soak in the sun and have some fun while it's still beautiful. This coming week looks very hot again!

We have a high tunnel hoop house that we had removed the plastic from due to hail damage. We have been letting the area sit fallow until recently. We decided to the high tunnel frame as a trellis for a late planting of green beans. The inside has been planted with a cover crop of buckwheat. If it works as planned, we should have a really cute spot for our green bean crop. Fingers crossed that we have enough time for them to mature.

Otherwise, not much news to report. Stay cool out there this week; it's supposed to hit 100 again!
