Farm Happenings for July 8, 2023

Posted on July 3rd, 2023 by Emily Hendrikx

Hey there,

Hope everyone had a good Canada day long weekend.  It was busy, and seemed quite productive.  Animal chores, seeding, transplanting, weeding, cultivating, and wandering around looking at different vegetables and flowers coming on.  When I wander around, I often find myself in the cut flower section of the garden, partly because it is fairly weed free, so it is pleasant and not stressful to look at, but also because I love when the flowers start to bloom.

Over the last few years we have been collecting, storing and splitting glads and different dahlias from different friends and neighbours.  It is a mixed bag of singles, doubles, spider, big, small, and I haven't a clue of any of their proper variety names, so I'm hoping it will just be a riot of colours, styles and sizes near the road this year.  The dahlia section is the biggest it has ever been with over 300 planted.  So here is hoping they all grow well and explode over the next few weeks.

Along with the cut flowers, we have a small handful of the edible variety.  Nasturtiums, calendula, chives, zucchini and sunflowers (did you know you can eat their petals, as well as flower buds?) all beautiful additions to salads, omelets, wraps, sandwiches, battered and fried or simply as a delicate and vibrant garnish.

With more variety and types of vegetables coming out of the garden, I hope your plates will soon be as colourful as a bouqet.

Thanks,
