Farm Happenings for July 29, 2021

Posted on July 26th, 2021 by Emily Hendrikx

Last Friday I was harvesting and thinking about this post, that beans are coming on fast, the peas are finished and in their space we will start planting the short day cool weather crops again, like radish, more arugula, bok choy, etc.  The tomatoes are starting to ripen, though the kids often walk through and get them first.  Pulled a potato to check on the babies underneath, and saw the beautiful red dirty jewels.  Fun fact, this has been the best year for potato beetle for us, the tops still look amazing.

In less good news, the neighbours' cattle came to visit again.  At least they came during the day so I saw them and could walk them back home before they did more damage, but unfortunately, damage had been done.  We will see what recovers, but we lost a lot of pickling cucumbers, winter squash, some of our own peppers and tomatoes as well as hot peppers we grow for Kultivar & Co.  (a delicious hot sauce company), and they punched a bunch of holes in our new row cover that we use to keep the bugs out of the brassicas.

Any ways, in the picture you can see some of the dry beans we are growing. (not the large field of soy, we aren't that good.....yet) I am excited to share a few new varieties this year with you.  Beautiful colours and patterns, they are flowering and setting the pods, I cant wait.
