Happy Winter! Farm Happenings for January 23, 2024

Posted on January 18th, 2024 by Lisa Duff

Dear Winter CSA Members,

Greetings from the snowy landscapes of Oak Spring!

Did you miss us?

We missed you! It was great to see those of you who ventured to the farm for your freebies a couple of weeks ago. I'm so glad that food got a home :)

As we embrace the winter chill, we wanted to share a quick update.

Winter Harvest Challenges: The recent cold spell has brought about some changes in our harvesting routines. With the frost settling in HARD, we've shifted our operations to the high tunnels and said goodbye to the field crops. Don't worry, the spinach will make it and you'll see lots of it in the spring CSA.

It's quite a sight to see the high tunnels blanketed in snow, and we're working diligently to ensure a bountiful Winter CSA despite the challenges.

What's Coming in Your Share: While the winter may limit our outdoor harvests, our high tunnels are still brimming with an array of colorful produce. In your upcoming Winter CSA share, you can expect a delightful assortment of salad mix, hakurei turnips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, garlic, spaghetti squash and butternut squash from storage. Our commitment to providing you with the freshest, locally grown produce remains unwavering but in January and February you're going to see some storage crops.

Upcoming Events: As part of our ongoing efforts to connect with our community, we're excited to announce upcoming events at the farm. Have you heard about Four or More? Stay tuned for details on the party we're throwing for CSA members who have been with us 4 or more years this Spring.  We can't wait to celebrate and commune with YOU.

We are anticipating more farm tours, workshops, and opportunities to engage with the farming process firsthand. We believe in fostering a sense of community and we want you to come to the farm.

Your Support Matters: We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support during the winter months. Your commitment to local agriculture sustains our farm and allows us to share the magic of winter produce with you. It's keeping me better fed than usual too!

If you have any questions, feedback, or simply want to share your winter recipes, we'd love to hear from you here or on the private FB Farm-ily page.

Thank you for being part of the Oak Spring community. We look forward to sharing the winter harvest this week.  You are an essential part of this community and know you are appreciated.

Keep an eye on the FB pages for some clips of our most recent days of installing the new propane heater in the newest tunnel. It will help keep the winter crops warm, speed up the germination of spring crops and enable us to have earlier than ever cucumbers. Whippee!

Yours in farming and family,

Lisa
