Farm Happenings for October 21, 2021

Posted on October 18th, 2021 by Lisa Duff

Hello Farm-ily!

Anyone who has been to the farm lately has seen the flock of chickens who refuse to stay inside their fence. Willy Palmer a talented and kind Hereford Farmer's Market patron and long time OSF fan came to the farm this week to take some photos. I thought this photo says it all for the state of the farm. This has been the most unruly flock of birds in Oak Spring history! This flock from an early age flew over the fence and busted through the fence like never before. They developed a love for cicadas and we had plenty. They feasted on a cicada rich diet late spring through mid summer and decided they didn't need their daily rations. We are in the process of planning a big chicken catching day but they are fast and furtive. We've tried several times but they are tough to contain and keep in one place. Bottom line: these are Feral birds like no domesticated birds I have seen. Gotta go with the flow sometimes in this farming life....

There is a little bit of spinach this week, more salad mix, arugula and Romaine head lettuce. We have Napa Cabbage from Good Dog farm and we are harvesting more Muriyaki Japanese sweet potatoes. Don't know about you but I love those purpley/ red sweet potatoes. So good! I just roast them in the oven til tender and they go with everything! I'll be using some Napa Cabbage in a veggie soup and I love it and Bok Choi as the base of a Chinese Chicken salad. Bok Choi is back! Hakurei turnips and radishes are slowly making a come back. We still have sweet and hot peppers and will see how our fresh onions look this week, small but juicy.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember to return your cooler bags with labels on. Most of you do an excellent job of this and we thank you. We are seriously considering switching to one time use cardboard boxes for next year so if the reusable cooler bag is something you like or if you like the idea of one time use boxes please let us know. Look for a survey on the FB Farm-ily page. ..

Speaking of surveys...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take 5 minutes out of your busy day and take our

member survey.  It means so much to us and will help us grow (in all the ways!)

I very much appreciate the continued support from dear friends/loyal customers & welcome new folks to the table. We can not stop being thankful for all our blessings; taking time to Stop, Reflect, and Celebrate them with close friends and family.

In 2021, Corona Virus is still affecting our lives this year with supply chain disruptions, high fuel costs, & skyrocketing feed prices etc.

It is being reported folks should expect a Fresh Turkey Shortage primarily due to the Reduction of Baby Turkey Poults by 10%.

No worries, I got you covered.

Ferguson Family Farm has a small, local slaughterhouse secured for the 400 turkeys raised for the Thanksgiving Feast.

Thank You in advance,

I personally order a turkey from Ferguson Family Farms every year I am in town for Thanksgiving (once in a while we travel away from home). We have a 14-16# bird ordered now for pick up the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. If you would like to pick up your turkey on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (November 23rd) here at Oak Spring farm let me know. If enough folks want to pick up here we can make it happen but order your bird now and let Lynne know. Otherwise choose from one of her convenient drop spots. Check out her website today.

Have a wonderful weekend!
