Farm Happenings for June 3, 2021

Posted on May 30th, 2021 by Lisa Duff

Welcome to June and the start of our Summer Share!

Some of you have been with us since April, some began in May and for some this week will be your first share. Hooray!

The weather has been all over the place; hey we live (and love) in the Chesapeake region and she's unpredictable. Mother Nature has been keeping us on our toes. Last week all we did was water, water, water. I expressed my gratitude for our new well many times over in the hot and dry of last week. A reprieve from the dry came Sunday (a week ago) and our days have cooled down drastically. The peas, beets and lettuce love the cooler weather. The squash, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and cukes like it hot!

This week we have gorgeous, big heads of romaine lettuce, frilly, light heads of butter and red lettuce, chard, kale, young greens, spring onions, radishes, fresh herbs and, hopefully, the first of our yellow summer squash.  Don't worry, you'll see more next week, this is just a tease. So much amazing early summer produce on the horizon. Look out next week for the start of snap peas, kohlrabi, beets, more baby greens, curly kale, chard, radishes and by Father's Day, FAVAS! Cukes and cherry tomatoes from the high tunnel will be up next.

A word about Bread share. We do not have enough bread share orders to make our minimum. WE will have to cancel bread share this year for Thursday delivery. I apologize.

Cheese share will be cheddar.

Fruit share starts this week-strawberries!

There are extra strawberries to order, check out the extras page to order cheese, berries, extra produce and merchandise!

New this year, Oak Spring Farm is offering logo'd baseball caps and cozy logo'd sweatshirts, and a fresh supply of car magnets, so you can represent your favorite local farm and all we stand for on a daily basis.

Check out our donation-based share this year which allows any member to contribute a one-time payment (multiple options available) to enable community members who would otherwise be unable to purchase a share, to partake in the nutritious food we offer.

Please be sure to join the Oak Spring FARM-ily Facebook page - a members-only group which enables us to share recipes, storage tips, delivery information and fun facts about farm life. We hope to have some good conversations going this year as we strive to help everyone get the most out of their shares. Check it out to find awesome recipes & videos like, How to Make Peppery, Nutritious Radish Greens Pesto. USE those beautiful radish greens! Storage tip of the week:

Eat your strawberries quickly, they will be less than 24hours old when you get them, they're not meant to last. If you must same them but them in a glass bowl and cover. If you want to wash them do it right before serving.

Romaine and other head lettuce can be stored in a plastic bag or damp paper towels. You'll want to wash it again. We dunk once here. I recommend cutting it then washing it before eating.

Romaine has long crisp sweet leaves with a nutty flavor. Great for Caesar or Greek salad or use individual leaves and layer chicken, tuna or egg salad on top. Roll them up or leave them as hand held salad fun.
