Farm Happenings for April 13, 2021

Posted on April 9th, 2021 by Lisa Duff

This week you'll see more carrots, spinach, salad mix, baby pea shoots, cilantro and parsley. We will also have red beets, adorable "cheriette" radishes, over-wintered beets, baby spring onions, and more small leaved curly kale. dIf pea shoots are new to you-try them! I put them in with my salad mix, saute lightly as a side dish, embellish any dish with a sprinkle on top OR eat themhem right out of the bag!

There are plenty of fresh, spring eggs too-now is a great time to make deviled eggs (see Julie's recipe on FB Farm-ily), quiche and frittatas--stock up!

If you pick up at John Brown General please remember to return your bag with the label ON.  Remember to bring a bag when you pick up at the farm! Home delivery folks please leave your bag out for us where we can see it.  thanks a million!

Do try A Friendly Bread's gorgeous, aromatic and naturally leavened bread.  This week, bread share is Olive (my personal favorite), and we will also offer Simple Country, Rosemary Orange Zest and Fig and Fennel! Yummy! Try something new!

Order your very own Oak Spring Farm logo'd baseball cap and cozy logo'd sweatshirt too. We have a fresh supply of car magnets so you can represent your favorite local farm.

Remember to join the Oak Spring FARMily Facebook page - a members-only group which enables us to share recipes, storage tips and fun information about farm life. We hope to have some good conversations going this year as we strive to help everyone get the most out of their shares! Long time CSA member, Karen Dubs, posted a delicious, nutritious green smoothie recipe today!

Remember to check out our donation-based share that allows any member to contribute a one-time payment (multiple options available) to enable community members who would otherwise be unable to purchase a share, to partake in the nutritious food we offer.

Storage tip of the week:

Keep your greens in the bag we send them in. If you need to refresh your greens mid week dunk them in cold water and give them a spin or a shake & drain in the colander. Your greens are almost always picked the day before delivery so they should stay fresh until your next share.

Think Quiche.  Spinach and kale are 2 of my favorite quiche ingredients. A dash of nutmeg or a tsp of dried thyme leaves gives spinach quiche a touch of elegance. Of course, bacon, for the omnivores among us, is a natural pairing with spinach or kale quiches! I made a spinach quiche for dinner the other day. Will post a video of it on the FB Farm-ily page!
