Farm Happenings for July 24, 2020

Posted on July 22nd, 2020 by Sarah Dawson

Premium shares for Friday, July 24th may include the following produce: salad mix, basil, chard, garlic, spring onions, summer squash & more!

Be advised that we are receiving locally grown and organic red cabbage from Lancaster Farm Fresh, as well as organic blueberries from Rosedale Farm in Hammonton, NJ.

Our sunflowers are ready! Flower bunches will not be generated into shares automatically but you may swap them into your share if you would like to receive them. We want to ensure members are expecting sunflowers with their share, so we are asking you to opt in to receiving them.

Bunches of flowers will not be packed in boxes to ensure quality, so please see below to see how you may receive your flowers if you opt into getting them:

-If you are a member who picks up at our Pennington farm, be sure to ask the farm stand attendant to grab your flower bunch for you.

-If you are a member who picks up at a group site, all flower bunches will be in a water bucket to retrieve apart from your share--Please be sure to remember to grab them if your swap for flowers/your label reads "sunflowers."

-If you are a member who receives a home delivery share and you would like to opt into receiving sunflowers with your share, please leave a water vase out for our driver to put the bouquet into so they do not wilt before you can bring them inside!

We are also offering the following items as add-ons to CSA shares:

  • Fresh and organic tofu
  • Almazara de Alcaraz Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Puglisi's organic eggs
  • Meadows& More chanterelle mushrooms

A note on our tomato storage practices: Tomatoes for boxed shares are harvested while partially ripe. Rutgers Mid-Atlantic Commercial Vegetable Production Recommendations handbook advises tomatoes be stored at 50°F. If tomatoes are stored at a lower temperature and then brought back up to the 50°F recommended temp before consuming, the flavor of the tomatoes should be unaffected.
