Farm Happenings for August 21, 2019

Posted on August 16th, 2019 by Joanna Winkler

Hi, everyone. Joanna is visiting a dear friend in Asheville this weekend, so this is Bryan here. This week we've been busy picking still more tomatoes, harvesting our first watermelon of the season (!), and cruising along with planting *even more* fall crops like arugula, radishes, Hakurei turnips, cabbage, and Chinese and European broccoli. So consider this a friendly reminder that if you haven't already signed up for our Fall CSA, the only way to have access to our limitless supply greens, peppers, cabbages, carrots, black beans, winter squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and much much more... is to SIGN UP TODAY!

Mostly though, I am just very excited to share with you that I saw a baby beaver (pictured with parent above) for the first time ever this evening! Our farm backs onto the Bush Cabin Run, which feeds into the Gunpowder Falls about a mile below our fields. The Gunpowder is obviously a beloved state park that offers fishing, tubing, kayaking, and beach-sitting, not to mention clean drinking water, to everyone in our region. And we take our role in both protecting and enjoying this body of water very seriously. Our farming practices reduce both silt and nutrient runoff into our waterways, and avoid toxic chemicals that can harm fish and wildlife. We love witnessing first-hand the habitats we help nurture as much as we love seeing families enjoying our produce. Today, seeing a juvenile beaver in a thriving riparian ecosystem was just the icing on the cake.

Thank you all for supporting sustainable, local agriculture, and have a lovely week. Get out to a state park near you!
