Farm Happenings for Week of September 1, 2020

Posted on August 26th, 2020 by Neil Stauffer

Pictured this week are Chris and Aeros, owners of Who Cooks For You Farm. Along with their hard-working farm crew, these tireless farmers supply a large portion of our veggies every week. The fully packed truck behind them can attest to just that. And while things are bound to not go perfectly now and again, it is highly worth noting that there are hundreds of little steps that have to go right each week in order to provide the nourishing organic foods they bring us. We are grateful for the hard work of all our farmers and for your willingness to support them with your food choices.

NEW MEMBERS AND DELIVERY DAYS We want to welcome our brand new Harvie Farms members this week. We are so excited to have more homes receiving farm box deliveries than we could have imagined when we started a few months ago. Thanks to many of you who have been telling your friends and family members. You are our best advertising! Also please note that zip codes 15206 and 15217 will now receive deliveries on Thursdays.

PACKAGING RETURN A simple note to those who are new (or would like a reminder), we would love to take back your clean cardboard farm box, thermal liners, and ice packs. Simply remove the clear plastic liner along with your foods, and then flatten the box and stack the returnable supplies on top of it the next day you are receiving a delivery. We love keeping our environmental footprint as small as we can. Here's a link to a short video showing how to unpack your box. Thanks for your help!

CHEESE SHARE This week we have a new and special cheese to offer. It is a basket cheese from Adam Dean at Pasture Maid Creamery. This is a semi-soft molded cow milk cheese with a slightly salty taste. Goes great with all of your Italian summer veggies like tomatoes and basil. But you can also substitute it for an Indian cheese like paneer.

CUT FLOWERS Can't tell you how excited we are to offer cut flowers for the first time. Collette Walsh at Sol Patch Garden in Pittsburgh will be providing single stem bouquets to add another splash of color to the season. And let's be honest, we could all use a little extra feel good treat around the house this year. They will be packed inside your normal box and wrapped with a damp cloth. Place in water upon delivery and enjoy!

WINTER SHARES In case you are wondering, we will be continuing Harvie Farms Pittsburgh farm shares throughout the winter. Hooray! We will be in touch about that process, but rest assured we will make it as easy as we can to continue your membership beyond November.

Keep digging in to your seasonal farm share, and please stay safe out there.
